Every time I walk into our garage, I remind myself not to fall into the trap of thinking I have to solve every problem or act like I know it all.

As a leader, it’s easy to focus on giving instructions, sharing strategies, and throwing out ideas. But over time, I’ve learned that this isn’t always the most effective way to lead. If your team feels like you have all the answers, they’ll stop thinking for themselves. Instead of being empowered to solve challenges on their own, they’ll bring every problem to your table—sometimes even the ones they are perfectly capable of solving.

Here’s the truth: The best ideas don’t always come from the top. As a leader, the most powerful thing you can do is ask the right questions.

The Power of a Simple Question

One of the most underrated yet effective tools I use in leadership is the question: “What do you think?”

That simple four-word question has the ability to ignite creativity, encourage new perspectives, and give your team a sense of ownership. It’s not just about asking—it’s about inviting collaboration, fostering critical thinking, and enabling shared problem-solving.

I’ve learned that great leaders don’t just solve problems—they challenge their teams to think critically. Personally, I don’t conclude on any idea without first asking, “What do you think?” This habit has allowed space for curiosity and innovation, driving progress in ways I didn’t always anticipate.

Creating a Culture of Ownership and Innovation

If you’re a leader and you’re not fostering an environment where ideas can thrive, where your team is actively involved in decision-making, and where their thoughts and contributions truly matter, then you’re missing out on unlocking your team’s full potential. Without this, you’re not building a culture of innovation, nor are you cultivating a sense of ownership among your team.

For me, I aim to be a CALMED leader. What does that mean?

  • Challenge your team to think critically
  • Ask questions that spark curiosity
  • Listen deeply to their ideas
  • Motivate them to keep striving
  • Empower them to take ownership
  • Develop their skills and future

Being a CALMED leader isn’t just about holding a title—it’s a responsibility. It’s about showing up every day with the mindset of fostering curiosity, driving innovation, and helping your team unlock their full potential.

What Type of Leader Are You?

So, what kind of leader are you? What questions do you ask your team to inspire creativity and ownership?

Let’s discuss in the comments. What do you think?

I’m still your Billionaire Mechanic, and I encourage you to share this post if you found it valuable. Let’s inspire and uplift others with the leadership tools that truly make a difference.
